In a system of separation of powers, parties serve to….?

September 2nd, 2010

Yeah yeah yeah, do my own homework, but I’ve looked and looked and I cannot find the answers to these last questions! So, all of you political scientists, please help!

1. In a system of separation of powers such as that in the United States, parties serve to:

A) bring about some coordination among the separate branches of government.
B) further disperse power.
C) allow the accumulation of power into a single branch.
D) hinder communication between Congress and the executive branch.

2. Reformers have proposed that the federal government should fund all congressional races in order to:
A) curb the power of PACs.
B) allow new politcal parties to form.
C) eliminate the last vestige of the party system.
D) increase candidates’ ability to buy advertising.

3. When Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) approved student visas for two of the September 11 hijackers six months after they died in the attack, it illustrated:

A) that federal bureaucracies can be overworked and underfunded.
B) that INS lacked legal authority to investigate suspected terrorists.
C) that the Department of Homeland Security was working ineffectively prior to September 11.
D) that the CIA had failed to share the hijackers names with the INS promptly after Sept. 11

4. The Department of Homeland Security:

A) was formed primarily from offices and agencies that already existed in other departments.
B) was established during the Vietnam War in 1971.
C) is the largest department in the executive branch.
D) was created from a merger of the FBI, the CIA, and the NSA.

Thanks a bunch!!

Ugh some of these could go to more than one answer though actually A seems to be the best answer for all thought I will also place the potential other one that could work

1) A or C
2) A or C
3) A or B
4) A or C

Why is the Obama campaign Threatening Legal Action Over NRA Ads?

September 2nd, 2010

Excerpts:

Fairfax, VA-Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has sent threatening letters to news agencies in Pennsylvania and Ohio to stop airing ads exposing his anti-gun record sponsored by the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF).

The kicker? NRA-PVF’s Ohio’s ads have not yet begun running.

http://www.nrapvf.org/news/Read.aspx?ID=11588&T=1

So what’s the big deal about the NRA advertising Obama’s voting record?

Those ads must contain evidence of the truth to scare Obama this much. A presidential candidate frightened by his own voting record? That speaks volumes to me.

I don’t care what this Obama character says about having (suddenly) a pro-gun stance, I know better than to trust him on this particular issue. I consider my Second Amendment rights even more important than my First Amendment rights.

Should the US Supreme Court give Constitutional Free Speech rights to Corporations for Political Advertising ?

September 2nd, 2010

Does the Constitution stand for people or business?
The Supreme Court is hearing arguments today attempting to overturn the restrictions on Campaign Financing by Corporations and Unions as a Free Speech issue.

Absolutley not! Our founding Fathers would never have considered giving free speech rights to non humans. This should be stopped.

Ronald McDonald House Charity?

Does the student run high school newspaper have what it takes to apply for this?

Organizations seeking funding should have a specific program that:
* Directly improves the health and well being of children
* Addresses a significant funding gap or critical opportunity
* Has long-term impact in terms of replication or reach
* Produces measurable results

Organizations seeking funding should have:
* A broad base of funding support
* Management capacity to effectively execute the project
* A clear, concise plan for project evaluation with outcome measurement

RMHC does not fund:
* Advertising or fundraising drives
* Partisan, political or denominational programs
* Ongoing general and administrative costs (including salaries, travel and overhead)
* Intermediary funding agencies
* Endowment campaigns
* Individual funding requests
* Programs that are strictly local in focus and not replicable

yeah looks pretty good to me!
make sure they are on supervision

Why is it that this year’s World Cup Advertising Campaign has gained that much of worldwide response?

September 2nd, 2010

Everyone from every part of the world I know is very focused on following the progressions of World Cup 2010 South Africa. They watch every game, they cheer for countries to which they have no relations at all.. and most of all, now everyone has (WE OWE IT) as their ringtone!!

I feel that this kind of attention is somewhat unprecedented. Am I wrong?
And if true, what do you think is the reason behind the success of the campaign?
Political? Marketing-related?
I want to learn from that success =)

Due to technology, before people couldn’t see every game since they’re mostly at night or early in the morning since they’re in different countries, but with the internet and tebo and all this stuff, it’s easy to watch the games, the more people watch the more they start to understand it and start to like/enjoy it.

As far as pride in certain countries, that’s been around for a long time, but with recent issues all over the world people are learning more and more about world culture and other countries, they now have "reason" to cheer or hate certain countries in anything, including soccer.

This Bud’s for you???? A boycott of Miller!! We should boycott ALL businesses that hire ILLEGALS!!!!?

August 24th, 2010

WorldNetDaily.com

Illegal crossing fence

American patriots first dumped tea over taxes; now it could be beer over lax immigration enforcement.

More than 100 groups are being organized to support a national boycott of Miller Brewing Co. and parent company SABMiller plc, because of what is viewed as the corporation’s support for illegal immigrants and amnesty for them.

"The boycott message is simple. Miller Brewing Company supports illegal immigration by giving money to groups that support amnesty, marches, and benefits for illegal aliens," the announcement on Monday said. "Citizens are encouraged to ‘Dump the beer! Dump the stock.’"

Consumers should avoid Miller Lite, ICE House, Miller Genuine Draft and Milwaukee’s Best, according to organizers who have posted their documentation and petition plans at MillerBoycott.com.

"It is time for these large corporations that are using their financial influence to open America’s borders to be punished!" said William Gheen, of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC. "It is time for the immigration enforcement movement to show these unscrupulous corporations what we can do when we all work together."

The coalition is pursuing the boycott under the auspices of the National Illegal Immigration Boycott Coalition, and will be headed up by Gheen and Jason Mrocheck of WeHireAliens.com and FIRE Coalition, officials said.

FIRE is the Federal Immigration Reform and Enforcement coalition.

"Miller Brewing Company is giving money to groups that support amnesty and citizenship for illegal aliens that have broken many of our laws," said Mrocheck. "The last thing we need is more illegal aliens driving drunk and killing American citizens."

The two lead organizations provide an online database of companies accused of hiring illegal aliens and encourage the securing of America’s borders and enforcement of existing immigration laws.

Now their efforts are expanding, because, they said, of a report that shows 13 Americans are being killed by "uninsured drunk driving illegal aliens" each day.

The Chicago Tribune recently had reported Miller paid more than $30,000 for planning, materials and advertising for the "Immigrant Workers Justice Walk" over the holiday weekend.

Miller officials denied it.

"The money supported a recent convention on immigration issues in Chicago, which provided attendees with information on how to become legally naturalized citizens of the U.S.," said Miller spokesman Peter Marino.

Walk organizers said they wanted officials to pay attention to the "contributions of undocumented immigrants," and change laws so that all immigrants can be legalized.

Miller company officials could not be reached over the holiday weekend, but information from the ALIPAC website indicated the situation developed when a group of immigrant advocacy organizations in Chicago discovered the company contributed $2,000 to the political campaign of Sen. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis.

One of the senator’s projects has been HR4437, which calls for strengthening the anti-immigration laws of the United States, including a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The company, which also hired three ad agencies to work with its reach into the Hispanic population, then took out a one-page ad in a Chicago newspaper confirming that it opposes the "Anti-Immigration Legislation."
I ALREADY boycott Tyson and Pilgrim’s Pride (SHAME)!!!! I have a friend who works at a prison, and there was an inmate there (an ILLEGAL from mexico), who told my friend that he worked for Tyson chicken. Well, the inmate had T.B.!!!!! Who pays for the political advertising of the major parties before elections?

August 24th, 2010

Not sure if you’re talking about Australian elections but, if so, here’s a reply I just posted about a similar question. "Hang on everyone. Let’s differentiate between government advertising and party political advertising. If the government ( Federal or State) says " this government is doing this" it’s government advertising which has always been accepted. If it says " The Liberal Party " or " The Labor Party" ( state level for example), that’s party political advertising and can’t be funded by taxpayers’ money. Why do you think parties are always doing fundraising? Hope this clears it up. Also, remember that if the government advertises vacancies, that’s also included in the advertising budget total.P.S. If the government ( at any level) didn’t say that it had accomplished things, people would say " what has the government done?’. Remember too, a road works initiative sign eliminating an accident blackspot is part of the advertising budget."

Can you correct my speech please??? thanks?

Pop Art
It is a new artistic concept, is the essence of an extensive cultural movement of the sixties. It has a connection with the state of mind of a period that is the answer to the media slogans whose histories made history and whose models influence in the people.
The popular culture and the way of life are associated with the sixties. This cultural demonstration was purely western: the USA was the center of this program.
The pop art artistically analyzes the fact that the World has been growing by the capitalist and technological conditions of the industrial society. The beginnings of the Pop Art were in New York and in England.
The political and economic stabilization in the postwar period led to a “reassessment” of something that in general is designed as popular.
Psychologists studied the societal consumption and created a marketing system to take a commercial advantage of the customers’ wishes. Thus, getting closer to the consumers and buyers, creating products for costumer demand and media campaigns. This affected individual behaviors and in the interpersonal relationships. Everyone could adore collecting knickknacks, reading comics, eating hot-dogs, drinking Coca-Cola, etc. Pop Art is based on this.
The themes of Pop Art are based in everyday life. Pop Art captures the realities of a period and the cultural change, the predisposition of a new generation, and this culture transforms into the style and the art.
People felt free to express themselves in this Cultural Revolution. This led to new fads and forms of expression. It is almost ridiculous that artists, critics and educators allow themselves to be surrounded bye the trivial culture and crammed their houses with popular and nostalgic art, relics, and publicity symbols, playing with banality and enjoyed reading comics, science fiction literature, cheap novels and TV mania.
The music and the lyrics of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones translated the state of mind, the euphoria, the nerve, the power and the realities of the young people of the sixties. That’s why artists like Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton and Andy Warhol designed disc jackets for musical groups like The Beatles and Velvet Underground of course using the Pop Art style.
Pop Art is expressed through painting, sculpture, music, cinema, photography and literature. Pop Art paintings have many styles, for example some of them are based on comics, other are made of a combination of collage and painting. Some of them are made at different levels. Most of the sculptures are based in things that we normally see, like typewriters, cigarettes, clothing, toilets, or even tables.
My conclusion is that Pop art is an every day item that is drawn in a brash and colorful way. It is inspired by comic strips, advertising, and popular entertainment. I like this kind of arte because I think that is an art that don’t follow all the rules and we can see the reality of our world.

i am mexican so i am just learning english
thank you

I made a few minor changes. I think it’s a pretty good speech. Good luck!

Why in heck don’t "Truth In advertising" laws apply to political campaigns? ?

August 24th, 2010

I think there should be a grass roots effort to push this through to apply for all political campaigns. If it’s good enough for small business, it’s good enough for our politicians!

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/adv/bus35.shtm

What truth-in-advertising rules apply to advertisers?
Under the Federal Trade Commission Act:

Advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive;
Advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims; and
Advertisements cannot be unfair.
Additional laws apply to ads for specialized products like consumer leases, credit, 900 telephone numbers, and products sold through mail order or telephone sales. And every state has consumer protection laws that govern ads running in that state.

What makes an advertisement deceptive?
According to the FTC’s Deception Policy Statement, an ad is deceptive if it contains a statement – or omits information – that:

Is likely to mislead consumers acting reasonably under the circumstances; and
Is "material" – that is, important to a consumer’s decision to buy or use the product.

idk is there anywhere where we can go to change that? I’m tired of McCains/Palins deceptions!
